Lucy and Cinnamon…a Chickmas poem

Lucy is getting ready for the Chickmas Poetry Reading and Cinnamon is humming the appropriate tune in the background, so you get the full effect of Lucy’s words. Cinnamon was going to play her saxophone but even with the mike, Lucy couldn’t chirp loud enough to be heard over the music, so they decided Cinnamon would hum instead.

Chickmas time

everyone tells me that Chickmas Time
is a very special season
a time when humans are happier
when they are kinder
when they get together
and exchange gifts
a time when they kill and eat pigs
who are beautiful and sweet animals
a time to send cards
a time to spread joy and love
(except to the pigs, of course)
a time to decorate their houses
and bake cookies

the thing is
that’s what it’s like at The Coop
almost every single day
except we love our pig friends
and would never kill or eat them
because, as I said, we love them
and we would never eat living beings
not even humans
because chicklets extend love to everyone
not just certain ones

humans shouldn’t sing joy to the world
they should sing joy to certain beings and then name them
that would be more honest
because they seem to have little regard for anyone but themselves
and even then they are on shaky ground

so during this season of parties and laughter
we chicklets will be celebrating all life
and the only wish we have
it’s the same every year
is that humans will stop killing and torturing us

Merry Chickmas to all
and unlike humans
WE really mean all

It Was The Night Before Chickmas

It was The Night Before Chickmas and all through The Coop
The chicklets were playing with their hula-hoops
Some stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Chicklaus soon would be there
The chicklets were nestled all snug in their beds while visions of cornbread danced fast in their heads
The hens in their kerchiefs, the roosters in caps, didn’t have time for a long winter’s nap
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter they ran to the window to see what was the matter
And what to their wondering eyes did appear but a miniature sleigh and one tiny reindeer
As they drew in their heads they heard a new sound and saw St. Chicklaus, when they turned around
There were gifts for the chicklets, the hens and the cats, the dogs and the roosters, the horses and bats. The cows and the goats, the birds and the ducks, even the pigs and the squirrels were in luck. All were included, it’s always that way, so everyone there had a wonderful day
The chicklets are happy, their heats are aglow, they’re all very grateful, they want you to know.  But parties need planning*, there are things to be done, so Happy Chickmas to you, they hope you had fun.

A Chickmas poem by Jack (and Calvin, although Calvin is just there for moral support)

Merry Chickmas

Chicklets wish everyone a Merry Chickmas
these are the things to remember at Chickmas time
pick up your clothes
keep your beak clean
don’t get paste on your feet
wear a scarf if it’s cold outside
take back your government
when you know that it’s destroying your way of life
the things you value, as well as the air, earth and water
always be polite
don’t laugh when your siblings fall down
don’t be apathetic
stand up for your rights (if you still have any)
hug your mother everyday
be generous
eat all your cornbread
don’t go into the duck pond alone
boycott corporations and businesses that pollute and
back racist, sexist, hateful programs with their money
don’t jump off of high places
don’t open presents before Chickmas or you’ll ruin the surprise
work to save animals from Factory Farms and stop the horror and cruelty
of animal experimentation
be helpful
read all the time
create something wonderful each day
go for help if you get gum stuck in your feathers
always work hard to make parties and celebrations fun for everyone
Have a Merry Chickmas

P.S.  I have more to say but my brother said that I’m taking up too much time, so I may come back later.  Calvin and I both thank you.

Chicklets want peace for everyone and everything…

The chicklets would like everyone and all things to live in harmony.  I gently tell them that, for the most part, the human species is incapable of doing that.  They just stare at me and ask, “Why?”  It’s so easy for them to love everyone and everything…to be happy.  They can’t understand why it’s so impossible for others to feel the same way.  So, they are sending their love out to the world, hoping that it makes a difference.  I hope that it makes a difference as well, somewhere, for someone.

Bean, Pinkie and Andrew take a stand for Peace…

Bean has researched Flower Chicklets from the 60’s and is fashioning herself after them. Pinkie believes that wars should be fought only by those who start them and never include innocent bystanders, or anyone else at all.  Andrew went on his first raid two days ago where he broke down the door of the Factory Farm and brought all of the hens and their chicklets to freedom.  Everyone is very proud of him.   The chicklets stand for love, honor, acceptance, beauty, creativity, freedom and peace.  They live those things every moment of their lives.  They asked me to tell you that Red, the bird, was also for peace and all good things.  So is her flock.

Flower, Rene, Ginger, Mouse, Sparkle and Katie

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Holly mentioned Rene and I know Laurie loves him too, so when I saw them walking to the park I asked if they would mind posing for a family portrait.  Rene and Flower are still madly in love.  They continue to lead Rescue Raids and help those in need.  They also help train Rescue Dogs for different groups who have joined in the Rescue Movement.

They have started a family and were happy to introduce their chicklets.  Ginger is following in Flower’s footsteps and loves taking risks and jumping off of things.  Mouse is Ginger’s shadow and is always by her side.  Flower is giving Sparkle a ride because a horse stepped on her foot.  Flower said that Sparkle knows she shouldn’t play underneath the horses but she loves them so much she just can’t stay away from them.  The horse who stepped on her was horrified and promised to give her rides for the rest of her life.  Katie is the youngest and has a personality much like Rene’s.  They are a very happy family and send chirps and peeps to all of you.

Cricket and Flutterby

“My mom said that humans are unhappy because they aren’t free,” chirped Cricket.  “They work at things they don’t like, they forgot how to play and they spend a lot of time doing what other people tell them to do.  She said all of that makes them crabby.”

“If I had to live that way I don’t think that I would be happy either,” peeped Flutterby.

“I know.  My mom said it makes them dangerous and they never think they have enough of anything, they always want more and they don’t care how they get what they want.  She said they’ve always been that way, from the very beginning.  They don’t embrace life they try to beat it into submission.”

“What does that mean?” peeped Flutterby softly.

“I don’t know but the hens just made cornbread.”

“I love cornbread,” peeped Flutterby, flapping her tiny wings with excitement.

“After we get some bread we can go to the Rubber Duck Pond and take a Gondola ride,” chirped Cricket gleefully.

“I’m so happy,” whispered the small chicklet.

“Me too,” chirped Cricket, turning in a circle.

“I feel bad for the humans.”

“Why?”

“What if they don’t have cornbread?”

Clarence, James and Roxy

The chicklets were on their way home from a luau when they started talking about humans again.

“My mom said that we have to stay away from humans because they believe that they have the right to decide who gets to live or die,” chirped Clarence.  “She said they hate us.”

“What did we do to them?” peeped Roxy.

“Nothing,” chirped Clarence.  “They just hate us, that’s why they treat us the way they do.”

“Well, my mom said that if aliens from another planet attacked the earth,  all the wars would stop so that everyone could fight against the aliens.  As soon as they were finished killing them, which my mom said would never happen, they would start to kill each other again,” peeped Roxy.

“What’s a alien?” chirped James.

“Someone who lives underground at Area 51 in Nevada,” peeped Roxy.

“What’s Nevada?” chirped James.

“I have no idea,” chirped Clarence honestly.  “None at all.”

“Do you think they sell food there?” chirped James.

“Maybe,” answered Clarence.

“I’d like some popcorn,” chirped James

“The kitchen’s still open,” chirped Clarence.

“Maybe if humans stopped fighting for a while and had more snacks they would be happy like we are,” peeped Roxy.

“I don’t think so,” chirped Clarence, shaking his head.  “My mom said they’re broken.”

Edward and Muffin

“My mom said that what doesn’t kill you doesn’t make you stronger,” chirped Edward.  “She said it just makes you miserable, unhappy, depressed, broken and destroys the joy you once had in life to the point that you often wish whatever it was, did kill you.”

“What does that mean?”

“I think it means that it’s better not to have anything try and kill you.”

“Oh, that makes sense,” chirped Muffin.  “Why didn’t she just say that in the beginning?”

Edward shrugged.  “You know how moms’ are.”

“Want some cotton candy?”

“Sure.” chirped Edward.  “So don’t let anything try and kill you.”

“Promise,” peeped Muffin.  “You either.”

Chicklet wisdom

IMG_2580

When I asked the chicklets and their friends to pose for this picture and told them what the heading would say, they were confused.  They said, “Why wouldn’t someone be happy for someone else?”  I started to explain but found that I didn’t really know the answer.  Chicklets don’t understand jealously, resentment, hatred or greed.  Those words don’t exist in their world.  So I shrugged and said, “I have no idea why some people aren’t happy for others.”  They said, “We are happy for everyone because when someone is happy then we are all happy too.”  I kissed all of them and thanked them for posing.  I told them I would pass along their chirps and peeps.
