Marie was a poet, a thrill seeker and an artist.  She had a style of her own and she didn’t care what anyone else thought.  She was a free spirit and marched to her own drummer.  Her poems were deep and life changing.  She wrote about her own life and the things she had seen during her travels.  Her poems were about love, hate, war, compassion, poverty, death and beauty.   She left bits of herself in each of her poems.

Men fell in love with Marie quickly and fully.  She enjoyed them but never promised anything more than a few hours of her time.  She had no desire to meet the needs of another person and was happy with the life she led.  Children would have tied her down and having to cater to a man was never on her agenda.

During her travels she met great people, famous people and people in desperate need.  She saw clearly that the world was divided into the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots.’  She did what she could, wherever she went, and when she spoke to others she never failed to mention the terrible discrepancy between the rich and the poor.  She told university graduating classes the truth about war. She told them about the never ending screaming and dying.  She read poems dedicated to mothers mourning their dead children and she read poems about happy children who had nothing at all.  She assigned the task of changing the world to those who had come to hear her speak.  She asked them not to let her down…not to let themselves, or the world, down…but she knew that they would.

Marie was serious about life but her paintings were unrestrained and filled with joy.  Having seen the darker side of things, she celebrated the the best of it in splashes of color.  Her paintings sold before they could be hung on gallery walls.  Her passion for life drew people in and made them hungry for what they couldn’t seem to get for themselves.

Until the end of her life, Marie continued to speak for the disenfranchised.  She continued to travel and tell the stories of those who had no voice.  Her poems continued to inform and enchant and her paintings continued to sell.  Two days before she was hit by a car and killed,  she spoke to a sold out crowd at The Art Institute of Chicago, where one of her paintings had just been installed.  She received a standing ovation.

Wherever Marie went, she made a difference.  She paid attention.  She listened.  She watched.  She reported.  She made the world a better place and that’s the best legacy of all.

The chicklets are lining up for the reading of A CHICKMAS CAROL…

Ms. Vivian is reading A CHICKMAS CAROL to everyone tonight at nine.  It’s always exciting and everyone will be snacking and curled up in their pjs.  Some of the youngest ones fall asleep right away but the others listen to every word.  It’s almost time and the tension is growing.  The horses and goats are having carrots and hay, everyone has something they love to eat and there will be popcorn and hot chocolate with marshmallows as well.  It’s just one more wonderful party at The Coo

Lucy and Cinnamon…a Chickmas poem

Lucy is getting ready for the Chickmas Poetry Reading and Cinnamon is humming the appropriate tune in the background, so you get the full effect of Lucy’s words. Cinnamon was going to play her saxophone but even with the mike, Lucy couldn’t chirp loud enough to be heard over the music, so they decided Cinnamon would hum instead.

Chickmas time

everyone tells me that Chickmas Time
is a very special season
a time when humans are happier
when they are kinder
when they get together
and exchange gifts
a time when they kill and eat pigs
who are beautiful and sweet animals
a time to send cards
a time to spread joy and love
(except to the pigs, of course)
a time to decorate their houses
and bake cookies

the thing is
that’s what it’s like at The Coop
almost every single day
except we love our pig friends
and would never kill or eat them
because, as I said, we love them
and we would never eat living beings
not even humans
because chicklets extend love to everyone
not just certain ones

humans shouldn’t sing joy to the world
they should sing joy to certain beings and then name them
that would be more honest
because they seem to have little regard for anyone but themselves
and even then they are on shaky ground

so during this season of parties and laughter
we chicklets will be celebrating all life
and the only wish we have
it’s the same every year
is that humans will stop killing and torturing us

Merry Chickmas to all
and unlike humans
WE really mean all

It Was The Night Before Chickmas

It was The Night Before Chickmas and all through The Coop
The chicklets were playing with their hula-hoops
Some stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Chicklaus soon would be there
The chicklets were nestled all snug in their beds while visions of cornbread danced fast in their heads
The hens in their kerchiefs, the roosters in caps, didn’t have time for a long winter’s nap
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter they ran to the window to see what was the matter
And what to their wondering eyes did appear but a miniature sleigh and one tiny reindeer
As they drew in their heads they heard a new sound and saw St. Chicklaus, when they turned around
There were gifts for the chicklets, the hens and the cats, the dogs and the roosters, the horses and bats. The cows and the goats, the birds and the ducks, even the pigs and the squirrels were in luck. All were included, it’s always that way, so everyone there had a wonderful day
The chicklets are happy, their heats are aglow, they’re all very grateful, they want you to know.  But parties need planning*, there are things to be done, so Happy Chickmas to you, they hope you had fun.
